British International 'A' Class Team Racing Pond Yacht Hull

Origin: England   Period: 1950's

A handsome mid-20th century International 'A' Class racing pond yacht hull built with a stunning mahogany diagonal planking construction — a labour-intensive method favoured for its strength and fair lines, and now rarely encountered in surviving models of this type. The hull carries a long, deep fin keel, painted red below the waterline with a crisp white boot-top against the varnished topsides.

The cream-painted foredeck has two openings, the larger one is believed to have accommodated a later radio-control conversion — evidence of the model's working life being extended and adapted as technology moved on, rather than retired to a shelf. Deck fittings include chromed fairleads, cleats, a boom traveller, and a small bailer, all consistent with a yacht built for genuine competitive sailing.

Models of this class were sailed competitively at organised regattas through the 1960s and 70s, including at the well-known yacht ponds at Fleetwood and Gosport, where clubs raced to strict class rules on hull length and sail area.

As with most yachts that saw real racing service, the woodwork shows honest wear consistent with age and handling — e.g. surface marks on the mahogany, and some flaking to the paintwork on the keel from lifting on and off of its stand when racing — rather than the untouched finish of a model kept purely as an ornament.

Offered on a associated later plywood display stand (not original to the yacht).

This item is sold as a decorative/display item only.
