Early 20th Century Tribal Monkey Skull Divination Basket

Period: Early 20th Century

A very interesting and curious object.

This well made and crafted tribal artefact from the Congo, central Africa, is a divination basket used by the Diviner or Witch Doctor to tell the future, cure illnesses or to provide protective medicines or amulets to counteract the work of witches.

The finely woven basket has a monkeys skull fixed to the centre and although it would have been used quite frequently it has remained in very good condition.
