A wonderful campaign Davenport desk made of the finest tulipwood in exceptional condition.
With a brass galleried top, cross banded in tulipwood, and leather-lined writing surface opening to reveal a fitted interior of one long drawer, one short drawer and one dummy drawer.
Removing the small turned knob of the dummy drawer releases the removable side pen/ink drawer. Full leather-lined candle slides pull out from either side.
The unusual configuration of drawers open to the front of this desk and not the side as is more common in davenports.
The lower drawer is also unusually deep and all three drawers have larger than normal brass military handles, which are truly stunning.
The Davenport is also inlaid with bone stringing to the four rounded corners of the main body of the desk all of which sits upon turned ‘Gillowesque’ feet.
We believe the desk had the leathers replaced some forty years ago and was polished to bring out the wonderful pattern and grain of the tulipwood.
First quarter of 19th century.
