A rare and unusual subject for an original etching by Sydney R. Jones.
This fine etching depicts the site of a dry dock, which we believe is Irish or English, getting ready to receive a ship or a liner of large dimensions.
Signed in plate lower left and also signed in pencil in margin lower right, Sydney R. Jones
Plate: 36 x 25.5 cm (57.5 x 43 cm framed).
Sydney R. Jones was a well-known and highly regarded English architectural artist.
We have easily found various images of his works depicting views with buildings of London, Cambridge, Oxford, and also a rich collection of technical drawings of pieces and details of furniture and ironmongery, which belong to the Victorian & Albert Museum.
For this reason, this etching illustrating a shipyard probably from the 1920’s, stands out from the more traditional repertoire of an artist that superbly mastered this particular printmaking technique.
