Fine Georgian Mahogany Campaign travelling Apothecary Chest

An exceptional and highly complete campaign apothecary chest dating from the Georgian period, circa 1810–1830.

The cabinet is constructed from finely figured flame mahogany, boasting an excellent rich colour and an untouched original patina. Designed specifically as a campaign item for travel, the exterior features a flush-fitting, recessed brass carrying handle to the lid, a matching flush-fitting military-style campaign handle to the lower drawer, and an original brass escutcheon to the keyhole.

The interior is remarkably well-outfitted. The upper section houses twelve bottles, most retaining their original paper descriptions, with the underside of the lid featuring its original deep red ruched velvet lining. Below, the partitioned, velvet-lined lower drawer contains a variety of bottles, the majority of which include paper labels. The glass bottles with ground glass stoppers are securely nestled within their respective compartments.

Crucially, the removable tray within the drawer holds an extensive selection of original accessories, including its handheld brass and steel scales, a complement of boxed weights, a glass mortar and pestle, a glass stirring rod, and leather-capped containers, among other objects of interest. As is typical for a campaign medical kit that saw active, long-term service, this internal equipment is clearly of various periods, beautifully reflecting decades of practical use, careful maintenance, and contemporary replenishment by its original owners.

This is a wonderful, museum-quality example of social and medical history, preserved in excellent, unrestored condition. A premier piece for collectors of early science, campaign militaria, maritime history, or medical antiquities.

In lovely original, unrestored antique condition throughout. The mahogany casing shows minor, expected age-related wear and surface marks consistent with age and use, but retains a superb stable structure and patina. The velvet lining shows authentic age-toning. The glassware is in good order, with expected residue and beautiful ageing to the original paper labels. The internal tools and instruments show honest wear reflecting their varied working periods.
